The first Siberian Mental Arithmetic Championship AMAKids Siberian Cup 2018 took place on April, 15 in Novosibirsk State Technical University.
More than 200 children aged 5 - 16 from Moscow, Novosibirsk, Omsk, Tomsk, Krasnoyarsk, Kurgan, Buryatia and Trans-Baikal Region took part in the tournament.
One of the most difficult tasks was to solve in the mind two columns of equations changing in an interval of 0,5 seconds in the amount of 99 examples, simultaneously reciting the poem.
In addition to the main program of the tournament, the children participated in a creative contest, where they demonstrated their talents to carry out several actions at the same time. For example, counting in mind while playing musical instrument.
Thanks to the development of mental arithmetic, kids begin to count faster than the calculator. The technique stimulates the development of both hemispheres of the brain, as a result of which memory improves, imagination forms, concentration of attention increases and analytical thinking develops.
Mental arithmetic is a method of calculation, based on the method of the oral counting. Mathematical calculations are performed "in mind," without a computer, a calculator, or paper. At the first stages of learning, children make calculations using abacus (counts) and both hands, which contributes to the development of fine motor skills and involves both hemispheres of the brain. After that, the child is taught to perform arithmetic operations in mind, using abacus only in imagination. After mastering this technique, children are able to subtract and add, divide and multiply, and also to calculate the square and cubic roots in mind. Mental arithmetic is used in 52 countries of the world, in Japan and China it is even included in the school curriculum. For Russia, Mental arithmetic is still a new technique.
