Students of Novosibirsk State Technical University (NSTU) are creating an information system aimed at tutors in mathematics. The special feature of the development is a combination of adaptive approach, analytics and active involvement of the teacher.
The development was carried out on the basis of the student design bureau "Robotics and Artificial Intelligence".
According to Elena Samoilova, a 4th - year student of the Faculty of Automation and Computer Engineering at NSTU-NETI, as a result of the analysis of existing educational platforms, it was revealed that some systems are focused on mass learning, others on course management, and adaptive solutions often limit the role of the teacher. The relevance of the development is related to the need to combine adaptive learning, results analysis and active teacher participation.
The system was developed as a team project and includes several contours: the "Student" and "Teacher" modules, the administrative part and analytics. As part of the project, Nikita Lapin, a 4th-year student of the Faculty of Automation and Computer Engineering at NSTU-NETI, developed the Teacher software module. The logic of the module is built as a chain: the student performs tasks, the results are saved in the system, the server side generates analytical indicators, and the teacher uses them to adjust learning. The profile shows the teacher's data, and the magazine shows the list of students, the material they study, and the dynamics of current academic performance. From the magazine, the teacher can go to the card of a particular student. The Courses section allows you to create and edit courses, lessons, and study materials, while the Assignments section is responsible for the task bank, filtering, creating, and editing assignments.
"The main pages of the Student module allow students to open lessons, study materials, complete homework, and see learning outcomes. The answers to the tasks are entered by the student in text format through the input field, after which the system checks their correctness and saves the result to the database," said Elena Samoilova, the developer of this module.
An analytical module has also been implemented to assess the level of material assimilation, track learning progress, identify weak and strong topics, and form text recommendations. For the calculation, the results of solving problems are used, on the basis of which the system generates primary indicators (the proportion of correctly solved tasks, the speed of solution, and the dynamics of the result relative to the previous attempt). Based on them, two integral indicators are calculated: the level of assimilation of the topic and the progress index in the form of a linear graph, which reflects the overall level of student progress in the learning process and allows you to assess the progress of mastering the topics studied.
"Let's say a student has solved a task with errors. After the first attempt, he/she is asked to repeat the topic and complete additional tasks, and the teacher is shown by the system that the topic needs to be explained again. After the second attempt, if everything was successful, the recommendations change: the student is informed that the material has been successfully mastered, and the teacher is informed that it is possible to proceed to the next section or increase the level of difficulty," Nikita Lapin gives an example of the work of an analyst.
The system allows you to take courses for grades 5-11 on various topics of mathematics, for example, "Fractions", "Degrees", "Equations", "Trigonometry", and can also be used to prepare for the OGE and USE.
The convenience of using the development in shaping an individual learning trajectory is confirmed by the students' supervisor, Associate Professor of the Department of Computer Engineering Irina Yakovina.
During the development testing phase, the main parts of the module were successfully tested: training scenarios, interface, server services, and analytics. In the future, it is planned to add the formation of a student's learning plan. Based on identifying the level of training, the system will offer the teacher a learning plan for creating a course, as well as expand recommendations and add new scenarios.
