Novosibirsk State Technical University (NETI) is developing an active filter-rectifier device for single- and multiphase power supply systems with nonlinear loads. Its application will help to smooth out the negative impact of electrical loads on the network and improve the quality of electricity.
"The quality of electricity is regulated by Federal standards, the document says that the network must provide a certain voltage level. When we connect various kinds of loads to the network, there may be a deviation in the amplitude and frequency of the voltage, voltage surges may appear. As a result, there may be failures in the operation of equipment connected to the electrical system, as well as additional losses of electrical energy, which reduces the efficiency of the entire system. The active-force filter allows you to smooth this out and get a stable power supply system without any deviations from Federal standards. The device is an electronic voltage converter on fully controlled transistors, it is connected in parallel to an electrical load and contains a control system that monitors the behavior of the load and introduces a compensating effect in the form of current," said Ivan Alexandrov, an Assistant Professor of the Department of Electronics and Electrical Engineering at NSTU-NETI.
The peculiarity of the algorithm developed by NSTU-NETI scientists is that it allows you to solve the problem not in the entire network, but precisely in the area where a complex nonlinear load is connected. After identifying in which phase the voltage distortion occurred, a compensating effect is introduced into this phase. The use of the converter in power supply systems makes it possible to smooth out the negative impact of electrical loads on the network and at the same time improve the quality of electrical energy. That is, to ensure the Federal standard requirement for the supply voltage when feeding complex nonlinear loads.
"An example of a non—linear load is an LED screen on which various images are broadcast. By itself, the screen consumes current in jerks, and when the image also changes, it begins to consume current in even greater jerks, which negatively affects the operation of the power grid. Our converter will allow you to smooth out all these jerks and voltage surges. In addition to screens, these can be ventilation systems in industrial enterprises, drilling rigs. When a drill hits an obstacle, it takes even more energy and current to overcome it than in normal operation. The active-force filter will monitor all this, introduce a compensating effect and ensure an increase in the quality of electricity," adds Ivan Alexandrov.
At this stage, the prototype is already ready, it has been tested in the laboratory. The developers plan to develop intelligent control algorithms. It is also planned to test the sample at a landfill that will meet real industrial conditions in order to confirm the effectiveness of the algorithms that scientists have developed and patented.
The project "Active filter-rectifier device for single- and multiphase power supply systems with nonlinear loads" was awarded a diploma of the first degree with a gold medal in the nomination "Best innovative project (development) in the field of "Environmentally friendly and resource-saving energy" at the HI-TECH innovation exhibition in St. Petersburg at the end of April.
