An atypical and cheap technology for the synthesis of a catalyst for the decomposition of natural and associated petroleum gas was presented by a group of scientists from Novosibirsk State Technical University at the international conference "Dynamic Processes in Catalytic Structures" at Tyumen State University.
The research is carried out in the laboratory of Chemical technology of functional materials of NSTU-NETI with the support of The Russian Science Foundation. The project manager is Pavel Kurmashov, Candidate of Technical Sciences.
"We proceeded from the task that the technology, on the one hand, should contribute to the most complete decomposition of gas. On the other hand, mining enterprises today burn about 15% of associated petroleum gas, while it can be processed into useful products through catalytic decomposition. For example, in nanofibers and nanotubes for composite materials, sorbents, electrode components, for the tire industry and metallurgy," said Tatyana Gudyma, research engineer, junior researcher at the Laboratory of hemical Technology of Functional Materials of NSTU-NETI.
The peculiarity of the technology lies in the atypical synthesis of catalysts by the burning method. According to Gudyma, inexpensive reagents are used to obtain the catalyst, synthesis does not require a long time, and as a result, there is no excessive formation of contaminated wastewater.
The scientist sees his immediate research task within the framework of the technology being developed in confirming his own scientific hypotheses.
"It is planned to use various organic reducing agents, for example, starch and malonic acid in the synthesis process. It is interesting to find out how they will affect the properties of the resulting catalyst. It is possible that the yield of hydrogen and carbon will increase during the decomposition of methane, the main component of the associated gas. Thus, the emission of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere will be significantly reduced," explained Tatyana Gudyma.
