Scientists from the Faculty of Automation and Computer Engineering of Novosibirsk State Technical University (NTI) have developed a control and monitoring system for the Faraday short-term power supply source (ICPP) manufactured by Solutions and Technologies in the Energy Industry LLC, which allows solving issues of power supply quality to industrial consumers.
The staff of the Department of Computer Engineering has developed a monitoring and control system for an innovative power plant based on bidirectional voltage converters and supercapacitors — industrial sources of short-term power supply, which are used to support the operating voltage of the load in case of voltage drawdown or loss from the mains, compensate for phase voltage asymmetry, limit power consumption from the mains and provide additional power to power the load in moments of peak consumption, as well as during initial overloads.
Unlike systems that use batteries in the storage unit, supercapacitors have a much longer service life, can be operated in a wider temperature range, and have compact dimensions. This makes it easy to integrate them into various power systems, but such solutions require a special monitoring and management system.
The monitoring system developed by a team of scientists at NSTU-NETI in collaboration with RTE LLC provides an extremely extensive amount of information to operating and dispatching personnel. This allows you to evaluate events in the power system, the specifics of equipment operation in various modes, the current state of the capacitor, and perform predictive diagnostics. Device operation data is available even on remote workstations and mobile devices.
According to Alexander Yakimenko, Head of the Department of Computer Engineering at the Faculty of Automation and Computer Engineering of NSTU-NETI, the relevance of the development is due to a large demand from industrial enterprises for devices capable of solving problems with the quality and uninterrupted supply of important technological lines.
"Currently, when the country's industry is developing, new facilities are being put into operation, problems with electricity supply are particularly acute: lack of capacity to supply new and expand existing facilities, frequent shutdowns when emergency protections are triggered, frequent shutdowns of technological processes and high product defects. These and other problems will be solved by developments such as ICPP. The installation combines the useful functions of an uninterruptible power supply and an active filter, and due to the use of supercapacitors, it has compact dimensions, a huge resource and is easy to maintain," said Alexander Yakimenko.
The scientist added that if it is necessary to participate in active work with the network for a longer period of time, the energy stored in supercapacitors may not be enough. In this case, it is necessary to pay attention to massive solutions with large lithium-ion batteries.
Earlier, AVTF developed algorithms for controlling a heat recovery unit, a ventilation system that preserves useful energy while controlling warm or cold air flows, and also repaired an imported ventilation unit at the Novosibirsk Special Music School.
