The teamwork of students of Decorative and Applied Arts Department, ISTR won the first prize in the nomination "Decorative panels" at the 27th International exhibition and competition of contemporary art "Russian Art Week".
The graduate qualification work was performed by Polina Malygina, Vadim Staver, Konstantin Bobylev, Vladislav Belozerov, Maksim Oleshko. The contesting interior composition of decorative panels and sculptures devoted to the topic "Live and learn" was created for the ground floor staircase area of the 8th educational building. Such compositions are popular and widely used in the decoration of different residential and public room interior zones, they allow applying a synthetic approach in creating products, i.e., the principle of combining materials and techniques. Project managers are Olesya Berezovikova and Anton Popkov.
The contest work "Live and learn" is a set of modern style interior decor. The style attracted the authors with its minimalism, freedom and challenge. While designing, great attention was paid to the constructive and stylistic unity to create practical items with artistic content using the greatest possible variety of materials. The dimensions and proportions of the items are selected in such a way that a person can assess the composition from afar, approaching the room or going upstairs. The panel is 1150 mm high, 2500 mm wide and with maximum depth of 130 mm. The sculpture is 1600 mm high, 1000 mm wide and with maximum depth of 130 mm. The silhouette and proportions of the art pieces are inspired by the dimensions and character of the room, i.e., the panel repeats the outlines of the wall with its right part being cut off in height by a flight of stairs. The design was carefully calculated: the panel consists of separate modules which greatly facilitates the assembly and installation, as well as gives a uniform weight load on the entire wall area.
The overall compositional approach is based on a combination of different fragments - wood and ceramic, pictorial and sculptural, geometric and decorative, textual and ornamental, spatial and flat - that create tense loaded areas alternating with compositional pauses (empty shelf spaces and backgrounds). An important feature of the art pieces is their interactivity: opening drawers, sliding decorative elements of the abacus, the keyboard, the ability to rearrange the decor. All this enhances the impression of the composition and invites the viewer to an active interaction.
The decor is interlinked with the structure of the pieces: elaborated loaded elements alternate with compositional pauses- free or slightly decorated blocks; bright, contrasting spots set the accents, but the overall color scheme is set in a calm gray tone.
This neutral gray color was chosen since it emphasizes the formality of the room and matches the existing color scheme of the space. The decorative color accents are green, blue, red, beige, white and blue applied in the form of painting and enamel fills.
An extremely differing range of decorative techniques was applied to produce and decorate the pieces: casting, manual molding of ceramic products, wood turning and relief carving, laser cutting, sculpture molding, inlay with ceramic elements and individual elements typesetting, relief sculpturing, glazing and decorative painting. This approach is ideal for creating modern interior elements and allows demonstrating the mastery of the arts and crafts.
