We are glad to announce the winners of the Regional SPEECH CONTEST in English held by the Department of Foreign Languages, Faculty of Humanities Education with the support by NovELTA (Novosibirsk English Language Teachers Association).
29 representatives from the universities of Novosibirsk, Kemerovo, Tomsk, Barnaul and Krasnoyarsk took part in the regional competition on October 31: NSTU NETI, NSUEM, NSU, SIM RANEPA, NSMA, STU, SSUGT, KemSU, TSU, Altai Branch of RANEPA and SFU. The competition final stage saw every participant presenting the speech in English with their personal opinion on the quote suggested by the organizer: "Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid" (Albert Einstein). Then students had one hour to prepare a new speech on the topic close to the previous one, lasting no more than 3 minutes. What really made it hard was that they could not use dictionaries or additional resources. The second quote for the participants' speech was a famous saying from the novel "Forrest Gump": "My momma always said: Life was like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're gonna get". While the contestants were preparing their speech, the audience took part in the workshop by Marina Ivleva, PhD, Foreign Languages Department, NSTU NETI "What it means to be a translator nowadays?"
The jury assessed the performance of the participants according to rhetorical canons, content and, of course, paying great attention to their fluency in English.
This year the jury consisted of experienced English teachers, a high-profile professional translator, a potential employer's representative and a native speaker: Sergei Grichin, PhD, Foreign Languages Department, NSTU NETI; Olga Kochenkova, ELT consultant, Magellan Bookshop, and Center Exam Manager for Magellan Exams (Ru158 Cambridge Assessment), Yekaterina Smaznova, conference interpreter; Gleb Toropchin, PhD, Foreign Languages Department (Technical Programmes) NSTU NETI; Irina Shchegolkova, junior project manager, Translation Agency " AUM " and Laura Huffman, educator and teacher of English, English Language Fellow, US Department of State.
The respected jury announced the winners:
The first prize went to Alina Torlopova, the second-year student of the Foreign Languages Department NSTU NETI (with Natalya Pomuran, PhD, Foreign Languages Department NSTU NETI being the advisor).
The 2nd place winner is Aleksandra Soldatova, the student of KemSU.
The 3rd place was taken by Daria Chetenova, the student of KemSU.
The winners were awarded with modern English fiction books. Each participant received certificate of attendance; and their language advisors' efforts gained them certificates of gratitude.
