The Times Higher Education published the second issue of its rating assessing universities against the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (University Impact Rankings 2020).
In total, the world ranking includes 766 universities, 47 of which are Russian ones. The rating assesses the contribution of the world's universities to solving the most serious global problems: from slowing down the process of climate change to the production of affordable and clean energy.
NSTU NETI performed best in the areas of "Reduced inequality" (by educating students from developing countries; ranked 101 to 200), "Affordable and clean energy"; (ranked 201-300) and "Decent work and economic growth" (also ranked 201-300).
To form the rating, researchers turned to the 17 sustainable development goals (SDGs) set by the UN. These goals formed the basic indicators for evaluating the performance of universities. The indicators include good health and well-being; quality education; gender equality; decent work and economic growth; responsible consumption and production, etc. Each indicator includes several parameters.
The developers created 18 ratings: the general one and 17 separate ratings for each of the goals.
The overall ranking includes 766 universities from 85 countries, and 857 universities from 89 countries are present in at least one separate ranking.
Japan is the most-represented nation in the table with 63 institutions, followed by Russia with 47 and Turkey with 37.
The list is once again led by New Zealand’s University of Auckland.
