Due to COVID-19 threat, classes moved online, so NSTU NETI students are missing the university where they have not appeared for about a month already. It took a week for five students of NSTU NETI's faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Technologies (MET) to build the University's campus in a popular computer game and to create the exact copy of it: you can now not only walk around it, but also build new buildings and laboratories.
In mid-April, a team of MET students decided to create a copy of NSTU NETI in Minecraft video game. The process of building from scratch took one week, with an average of 4-5 hours per day.
"We took measurements and location of the buildings from 2GIS. The facades of buildings and the campus were built according to its photographs. It turned out that there were not enough of them on the Internet, so we had to send one of our online-builders to the campus to take additional photographs," comments Ilya Anisimov, one of the project managers, a 1st — year student of NSTU NETI's faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Technologies.
Each participant chose one of the University buildings and created it, then we judged the result together and edited it.
"Now as the University is closed, our students have not been there for a long time and are missing it. We have launched a public server with a map that anyone can access. At first we planned that players would only walk and watch, but if they want to take part in the construction process, they can write to me, and I'll give them access to edit the map," says Ilya Anisimov.
Students are planning to get even more like-minded people involved in the process and to start making a detailed copy of all the University buildings.
