NSTU has been ranked among the best Emerging Economy Universities three times in a row. It is in the group of universities placed from 251 to 300. The total number of the Emerging Economy Universities is 442. They are mostly from BRICS countries. Only 35 Russian universities were featured, and among them NSTU holds the 20th place. It equals Saint-Petersburg Electrotechnical University, Ural Federal University, outranking Far-East Federal University and Siberian Federal University. The leaders of the rating are Chinese Universities, which outrank Moscow State University holding the 4th place.
‘Ratings are very important for a number of reasons. First and foremost they give the staff understanding that what they do is not in vain and their work is internationally recognized. It stimulates for further work. What is more, the most motivated applicants pay attention to the university rankings. That is why, rankings help to attract better students. And to top it all, ratings are taken into account when universities compete in national research and educational projects like ‘Russian Academic Excellence Project 5-100’ or ‘Science’. It goes without saying that we would like to win these projects’ competition, and do all to be featured high in international rankings’ says the NSTU Rector Anatoly Bataev.
‘The Times Higher Education specialists have worked out the criteria for evaluating universities’ performance. They include 13 parameters to judge research-intensive universities across all of their core missions: innovations, teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook. The Subject Rankings experts evaluated the university educational environment, the amount of research done at the university, citations and international cooperation.
We have been featured high due to the growth of the number and quality of our publications as well as for the cooperation with leading research institutions. We intensified our research in the several directions. First, we carry out joint research projects with Budker Institute of Nuclear Research, including the development of synchrotron ‘SCIF’ within ‘Akademgorodok 2.0’ project. Second, we set up laboratory for quantum cryogenic electronics to research physical processes in microwave quantum structures which make the basis for the new quantum computer. In this field we cooperate with Leibnitz Institute of Photonic Technologies (Iena, Germany). This cooperation gives way to publishing in the most prestigious journals’ says the Vice-rector on Research Aleksey Vostretsov.
