In April, the fencing team of NSTU-NETI won gold at the Universiade of University students of the Novosibirsk region for the 27th time in a row.
The first comprehensive annual event called the Universiade took place in the Novosibirsk Region in 1994 and has not been held three times over the past 30 years for various reasons. This means that for thirty years the national fencing team of NSTU-NETI has no equal in the team competition of the regional Universiade. And this is just one of the many achievements of our fencers, whose section celebrates its 60th anniversary this year. In total, the national fencing team of NSTU-NETI has never lost the team competitions of student groups of the Novosibirsk region since 1966!
Here is what the senior coach of the team, Honored Worker of Physical Culture of Russia Kamil Akhmetovich Suleymanov tells: "The fencing section at NETI started working in 1964. The university did not have its own sports facility, and a balcony and a small room in the Dynamo sports complex were rented for the section. I became the first coach. Two years later, the section found its home in NETI. In 1968, the intercollegiate fencing sports improvement center was organized on the basis of the university, since our athletes showed high results and became the basis of the Novosibirsk Region national team."
Over the 60 years of work of the fencing section of NSTU-NETI has prepared:
• 55 masters of sports (35 people — Masters of sports of the USSR, 20 — of the Russian Federation);
• 6 Masters of sports of international class: Anatoly Koteshev, Alexander Troshin, Stanislav Pozdnyakov, Andrey Korobko, Anatoly Kostenko, Pavel Bykov. Anatoly Koteshev, Stanislav Pozdnyakov, Pavel Bykov also became honored masters of sports.
The most famous of the fencing students of NSTU-NETI:
Anatoly Koteshev (rapier) is an honored Master of Sports, the first world champion from the USSR in fencing, two—time world champion, Olympic silver medalist (Munich, 1972), two-time champion of the World Student Games.
Stanislav Pozdnyakov (saber) is a four—time Olympic champion, ten-time world champion, and now the president of the Russian Olympic Committee.
Student fencing competitions in Novosibirsk began to be held in 1966 in the format of the regional universities championship. In 1967, the first Spartakiad of Universities of the National Academy of Sciences was held, fencing competitions were included in the program of this complex event. Then the spartakiads of the universities of the region with a comprehensive score, where the results of the performances of national teams in various sports were calculated, were held every four years. Fencing was the invariable sport of these competitions. In the period between the Spartakiads, students competed in the university championships held annually.
The main rivals of the NETI team in the early years were the NINH (NGUEU) and NSU teams. At the end of the 70s, the fencers of NIIZHTA (SGUPS) noticeably increased their skills.
Since 1994, the Universiade of universities of the region has become the legal successor of the Soviet Spartakiads, and a comprehensive test has become an integral part of this event. Currently, the NSO Universiade includes 25 sports, of which the best 16 are included in the overall team championship of universities.
